Victory for Spike Jonze, the ‘Trillion Dollar Flyer’ and Apple.com

Last night, the eyes of the creative industry were fixed on London’s Roundhouse for the 2010 D&AD awards ceremony. This year’s President’s Award went to Spike Jonze in recognition of his ‘outstanding contribution to creativity’.

Jonze has been awarded six Yellow Pencils for his work over the last fifteen years, starting out in 1995 with his video for Weezer’s Buddy Holly (below). The D&AD President, Paul Brazier, went on to present five coveted Black Pencil awards for the hottest design and advertising work of the last year.

In the Graphic Design category, TBWA / Hunt Lascaris were awarded a black pencil for their ‘Trillion Dollar Flyer’ campaign for alternative daily newspaper The Zimbabwean (pictured top). Eye wrote about their posters, which printed text on devalued Zimbabwean currency instead of paper, last year: see ‘Money’s worth less than paper’ and ‘Trillion-dollar brainwave’. The team also picked up three yellow pencils for their work, in Graphic Design, Outdoor and Integrated.

Apple Website Grab

Apple continued their D&AD winning streak, taking home a black pencil for the apple.com website (above). An Environmental Design award went to Diller Scofidio + Renfro for turning a former New York City train line into a park (below). And Sapient Nitro picked up two awards, in Integrated and Direct, for the ‘The Best Job in the World’ - a campaign for Tourism Queensland that advertised a chance to become a ‘caretaker’ on a beautiful Barrier Reef island.
