Out of the box in New York

The first Eye archive night to be held outside London takes place at the Pencil to Pixel show in New York next Monday evening

Early next week, On Monday 6 May 2013, we will be in New York, where we’re inviting a number of local designers and writers to present a ‘Desert Island Discs’ selection of items from Monotype’s rich archive of typographic history – some of which is on show at the company’s ‘Pencil to Pixel’ exhibition in Tribeca, which opens tonight.

Admission is free via Eventbrite, but space is limited.

Our distinguished guests – Christian Schwartz, Scott Stowell, Prem Krishnamurthy – have each chosen items to show and talk about in front a small audience for this informal session. Eye art director Simon Esterson has also selected something for informal discussion, and Eye editor John L. Walters will introduce the session. The venue is Tribeca Skyline Studios, 205 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013.

The Monotype archive in NYC also includes treasures from the Linotype and ITC collections – including U&lc (bottom). Members of the current Monotype team will be on hand to discuss the items, as will Eye art director Simon Esterson. Eye 84, the Monotype special issue, unavailable for the past couple of months, has been reprinted to meet demand: copies will be available on the night.

This is the third ‘Eye curates’ session: tickets to our previous events at the V&A (with Nick Bell, David Pearson and others) and St Bride Library (with Sara De Bondt, Paul Barnes and others) went quickly, so we recommend that you book asap on Eventbrite. Tickets are free but booking is essential.

There will be another event hosted by Eye at the same venue next Wednesday 8 May (2013) featuring Alan Kitching, who has just completed a major New York commission in collaboration with Pentagram. Tickets here (also free).
