Graphic Design: Now in Production

Walker Art Center in Minneapolis<br>22 Oct–22 January 2012

A graphic design exhibition at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis promises to be huge – in scope, size and impact. The curators of ‘Graphic Design: Now in Production’ (22 Oct–22 January 2012) include Ellen Lupton, Andrew Blauvelt, Ian Albinson (artofthetitle.com), Jeremy Leslie (MagCulture.com) and Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio (Brand New).

Lupton says: ‘The exhibition revisits the idea of “designer as author”, which galvanised independent designers in the 1990s, and shows how this impulse has morphed into a more collectivist, pragmatic vein of work … The designer has become a producer-editor, publisher, tool-maker, and entrepreneur.’

Designers featured include Daniel Eatock (see Eye 73), Sosolimited, Sarah Illenberger, Jop van Bennekom (see Eye 61) and Peter Buchanan-Smith, whose ‘hipster axes’, from his company Best Made Products, 2009-11 are shown above. Associated events include a session with Viktor, the wall-drawing machine devised by Jürg Lehni (see next page).
